Book Review: The New Rules For Love, Sex, & Dating
New coronavirus laws in England have made it illegal for couples who live in different homes to have sex indoors and stay overnight. An exception has not been made for couples who do not live together, meaning that they can spend time together outdoors but not inside. People who have sex outside can be punished under pre-existing laws on outraging public decency and indecent exposure. At the start of the lockdown, government ministers and officials explicitly banned couples who did not live together from meeting.
At a press briefing on 24 March, the deputy chief medical officer suggested they should move in together if they wanted to continue seeing each other.

The New Rules for Love, Sex & Dating
Welcome to the Horniest Summer in American History. Everything is both sexy and unsexy. Intimate and socially distant. For lack of a better word: complicated. For some, love in the time of COVID is a bit like having been proverbially sent to your room, and in turn, denied the pleasures of sex and dating on the whole. In short, present tense romance is a strange beast.
In the week before the lockdown measures came into force, Boris Johnson issued advice around social distancing and self-isolating, believing the public would be sensible and do the right thing. In dating app land, it was a similar situation. People were definitely feeling it. Several days into the UK lockdown, Tinder experienced a record day of swipes — three billion globally — the most it saw since its launch in Sex toy brands like Lelo experienced a 40 per cent increase in sales.
On apps, I noticed that people were a lot more chatty and responsive — probably a result of the reduced social interaction. But I also noticed that all four guys I chatted to suggested meeting up. At first, I thought it was a joke, but it turned out they were all being quite serious. In that first week, we were all trying to wrap our heads around the severity of coronavirus, and how infectious it actually was. But as I started to feel symptoms that week, there was no way anyone would be cycling over.
Two weeks into the lockdown, however, one of them, Daniel, resurfaced to ask if he could drive over. I asked him why he thought that would be a good idea, given that we were still knee-deep in a pandemic. I was isolating on my own, so was he — would it really be that bad?
Is one small kiss too curt? If you put three big kisses does that imply you want to marry them? Either text someone back or stop engaging. Our phones are never more than three feet away from us, whether awake, asleep or on the loo. Come on, we all do it. Maybe he got hit by a train or fell into the river?
Okay, maybe not. Last February I decided to try a series or book. So I downloaded the Kindle version and quickly read it. After seeing how incredibly practical the book is, I wanted to get it into the hands of every teenager in our ministry. I appreciate the solid content, and so did our small groups as they watched intently and leaned in to listen. We purchased the four-week small-group DVD set and gave each leader a copy of the book a month in advance.
In the back of the book is a small-group video discussion guide. We asked leaders to read the book, especially focusing on chapters 1, 6, 9, and 10 the chapters the videos address. Our leaders and students loved the reading, teaching, and conversation. This resource was a win for our ministry. You can purchase a copy here.
